Supertasters, gummy bears and bouncy cornflour!

As you may well know it is science week at Robert Arkenstall this week.  Already lots of strange and exciting stuff is going on everywhere in school!

It is also the 2017 Cambridge Science Festival in, of course, Cambridge and they have some amazing events going on until the 26th March.  Have a look at their website to see if there is anything to take your fancy - there are loads of activities, exhibitions, events and talks for all ages. Well worth a visit.

On the school front there have been lots of different activities.  Mars class were testing for 'Supertasters' -  a person who experiences the sense of taste with far greater intensity than average, with some studies showing an increased sensitivity to bitter tastes. It may be a cause of selective eating, but selective eaters are not necessarily supertasters, and vice versa.  It involved blue tongues and magnifying glasses!

Other classes will be trying this later in the week.

If you are interested then here is a link to the BBC page explaining how you can try it for yourself.

Rumours of Gummy Bear experiments have come from Mars Class - Gummy Bears subjected to water torture and fed vinegar?  Gummy Bears swimming in milk?  Expanding Gummy Bears?  Further news to follow but I believe the Gummy Bears are holding up well........  possibly.......?

If you want to know more and also try this at home just Google 'Gummy Bears Experiments!'

In Jupiter class they looked at non-Newtonian substances!  Using mixes such as cornflour and water, and borax and glue,  they made liquids, no solids, no  liquids.......  Oh it's so confusing!  A liquid that can act like a solid?

If you want to know more then here is a link to the BBC science page explaining - you can try it at home too!

I'm not sure what Saturn class were up to but there were skeletons and lots of measuring going on!  Ask your child what they got up too!

We have lots more activities planned so watch this space for more news later in the week.

And why is there a smell of baking bread and carrots along the corrider??
